This is the stairway in Judith's great-great grandfather's home. Ferencz Szommer was a master watchmaker. His jewelry shop was downstairs, and the family lived upstairs. Situated alongside the Rába River which could be viewed from the upstairs rooms, hand-painted murals depicting the seasons once adorned these walls. Ferencz, his wife, Mária, their daughters Mária, Terez, Ida, and Ernesztin, and their son, Ferencz, alighted these very steps, grasped the wooden handrail, and perhaps peeked through the elaborate wrought iron balusters.
This humbly sacred space represents why some choose to collect old things. There is a connection to the past that eventually leads to ourselves.
